Homework

Homework

At SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School, we believe that homework plays an important role in supporting children's learning and strengthening the partnership between home and school. It provides valuable opportunities for children to practise and consolidate what they have learnt in the classroom, develop independence and take increasing responsibility for their own learning.

We recognise that parents and carers play a vital role in their children's education, and homework provides an opportunity for families to share in their child's learning journey.

Our approach to homework aims to:

  • Strengthen home-school partnerships by encouraging parents and carers to take an active interest in their child's learning and progress.

  • Reinforce classroom learning by providing opportunities to practise, consolidate and apply key knowledge and skills.

  • Develop independence and responsibility by helping children establish positive learning habits, manage their time and take pride in their work.

  • Encourage communication by giving children opportunities to talk about their learning, explain their thinking and share their achievements with their families.

  • Make learning meaningful by encouraging children to apply their knowledge and skills in everyday situations beyond the classroom.

  • Prepare children for the future by gradually developing the organisational skills, confidence and independence they will need as they move towards secondary school.

  • Promote a lifelong love of learning by helping children recognise that learning takes place everywhere, not just during the school day.

Homework is set regularly across all year groups, with activities carefully considered to ensure they are appropriate for children's ages and stages of development.

We particularly encourage families to make regular reading at home a priority, as this is one of the most valuable ways to support children's confidence, vocabulary, understanding and overall academic progress.

Our approach to homework is outlined in our school's Teaching and Learning Policy, which provides further information about expectations across the different year groups.

Above all, we want homework to be a positive and purposeful experience that builds children's confidence, celebrates their achievements and encourages a love of learning.
