At SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School, we believe that learning extends far beyond the classroom. Educational visits, visitors and enrichment experiences are an essential part of our broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum, providing children with memorable opportunities to explore, discover and develop a deeper understanding of the world around them.

We are committed to ensuring that every child benefits from a rich variety of experiences that enhance their academic learning, develop their confidence and independence, and support their personal, social, physical and spiritual development.

Rooted in our Catholic ethos, we recognise the importance of educating the whole child. We want our pupils to be curious, enthusiastic learners who develop a love of learning, appreciate the world around them and recognise the value of new experiences.

Educational Visits – Making Learning Meaningful

Educational visits are carefully planned to complement and enrich our curriculum, allowing children to experience learning in real-life contexts.

Throughout their time at SS John and Monica's, children have opportunities to visit theatres, museums, historical sites, parks, places of worship, sporting venues and other locations of educational interest.

These experiences enable children to make meaningful connections between classroom learning and the wider world, develop new skills and deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Our programme varies each year according to curriculum priorities, availability and the needs of our pupils.

Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) – Christmas Theatre Visits

Our Reception and Key Stage 1 children enjoy an annual visit to the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) to experience a Christmas production. This much-loved tradition introduces our youngest pupils to the excitement of live theatre, inspiring imagination, creativity and a love of storytelling.

Theatre Experiences – The Crescent Theatre and The Old Rep

Visits to local theatres allow children to experience live performances, develop their appreciation of drama and literature, and gain inspiration for their own reading, writing and performance skills.

Edgbaston Cricket Ground

Visits and sporting experiences provide opportunities to learn about cricket, teamwork, sporting achievement and healthy lifestyles, while inspiring children to participate in sport and physical activity.

Cannon Hill Park

Our local park provides opportunities for environmental studies, geography fieldwork, science investigations, outdoor learning and physical activity. Children develop an appreciation of nature and the importance of caring for our common home.

Birmingham Wildlife Conservation Park

Visits enable children to learn about animals, habitats, biodiversity and conservation. These experiences support our science curriculum and encourage children to understand their responsibility to protect the natural world.

Making the Most of Our Local Environment

We are fortunate to be situated in Moseley, an area rich in history, culture and natural beauty.

We actively encourage children to explore and appreciate their local community, recognising that valuable learning opportunities can be found close to home.

Moseley Park and Pool – A Unique Learning Opportunity

Our school is particularly fortunate to have access to Moseley Park and Pool, a beautiful private green space in the heart of Moseley.

The school holds a key to the park, enabling us to make regular use of this wonderful local resource.

Moseley Park and Pool provides a valuable outdoor learning environment and is used to enrich a range of curriculum areas, including:

  • Science: Exploring plants, trees, habitats, seasonal changes and the natural environment.

  • Geography: Developing fieldwork skills, observing physical and human features, and understanding our local environment.

  • Art: Drawing, sketching and finding inspiration in the natural landscape.

  • English: Providing inspiration for descriptive writing, poetry and storytelling.

  • Physical Education: Enjoying outdoor games, physical activity and sporting events.

  • Religious Education: Appreciating the beauty of creation and reflecting on our responsibility to care for our common home.

The park is also the setting for our annual School Sports Day, providing a wonderful opportunity for children, staff and families to come together to celebrate participation, teamwork, determination and sporting achievement.

We recognise that not all enrichment opportunities require children to leave the school site.

Throughout the year, we welcome a range of visitors and specialist providers who share their knowledge, skills and experiences with our pupils.

These may include authors, poets, artists, musicians, theatre groups, sports coaches, representatives from charities, community organisations and other professionals.

Visitors bring expertise and enthusiasm into our classrooms, helping children to explore new ideas, ask questions, develop their oracy and communication skills, and discover interests and talents.

All visits are organised in accordance with our safeguarding procedures, ensuring that children benefit from enriching experiences within a safe and supportive environment.

Year 6 Residential Visit – Building Confidence and Independence

One of the highlights of children's time at SS John and Monica's is the opportunity to participate in our Year 6 residential adventure experience, which is offered during the autumn term.

This much-anticipated experience provides children with the opportunity to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges and develop important life skills in an exciting and supportive environment.

Through a range of outdoor and adventurous activities, children are encouraged to:

  • Develop independence: Taking greater responsibility for themselves and their belongings.

  • Build confidence and resilience: Trying new activities, overcoming challenges and recognising their achievements.

  • Strengthen teamwork: Working collaboratively, communicating effectively and supporting one another.

  • Develop leadership skills: Taking initiative, making decisions and encouraging others.

  • Improve problem-solving: Thinking creatively, persevering and finding solutions to unfamiliar challenges.

  • Build friendships: Developing positive relationships and creating lasting memories with their classmates.

For many children, the residential visit is an important milestone in their personal development, helping them to grow in maturity and confidence as they prepare for the transition to secondary school.

Safety and Supervision

The safety and wellbeing of our pupils are central to the planning and organisation of all residential experiences.

Residential visits are subject to appropriate approval, thorough risk assessments and established educational visits procedures.

Specialist outdoor and adventurous activities are delivered by suitably qualified and competent instructors, with appropriate supervision and safety arrangements in place.

We work closely with families to understand individual medical, dietary, SEND and pastoral needs, making appropriate arrangements to enable children to participate safely and confidently.

Inclusion and Equal Opportunities

We are committed to ensuring that educational visits and enrichment opportunities are accessible to all pupils.

We recognise that children have different needs, abilities and circumstances, and we work closely with families to identify and remove barriers to participation wherever reasonably possible.

Appropriate adjustments, individual risk assessments and additional support are considered to ensure that children with SEND, medical conditions or other needs can benefit from these valuable experiences.

Where financial difficulties may affect participation, we encourage parents and carers to speak confidentially with the Head Teacher so that available support and possible arrangements can be explored.

We believe that every child should have opportunities to experience the excitement, enjoyment and personal growth that learning beyond the classroom can provide.

Planning, Safeguarding and Communication

All educational visits are carefully planned and organised in accordance with our school's Educational Visits Policy, safeguarding procedures and relevant health and safety guidance.

Before visits take place, we ensure that:

  • Educational aims and curriculum links are clearly identified.

  • Appropriate risk assessments and safety arrangements are in place.

  • Suitable staffing, supervision and emergency procedures are established.

  • Individual medical, allergy and additional needs are considered.

  • Parents and carers receive relevant information about the visit.

  • Necessary parental consent and payment arrangements are completed.

  • External providers and specialist instructors meet appropriate safeguarding and safety requirements.
