Public Sector Equality Duty

The PSED, or Public Sector Equality Duty, was enacted in April 2011 and has three main parts. This duty replaces all previous duties (for example, the Disability Discrimination Act, 2001 and Disability Equality Duty, 2005). Public bodies, including schools, are required to have due regard to the need to:

Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Equality Act 2010
Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.
Foster good relations across all characteristics and between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not.

Meeting Requirements

We have an accessibility plan in place, which forms part of our policies to ensure that pupils, staff, and other stakeholders, such as parents and visitors to the school, receive equal opportunities in protected characteristics (e.g., age, race, disability, gender).

We continually try to improve the school environment and curriculum to make it easier for all pupils, parents, staff and visitors to access our building and services. In addition, we are looking at ways to improve our spoken and written communication between the school and our pupils, parents and other interested parties.

For the school year, we work through our objectives using a cohesive Accessibility Plan.

Promoting the Protected Characteristics at SS John and Monica Catholic Primary School

We work to ensure that our children understand that:

•   Everyone is included
•   Everyone is different
•   We celebrate our differences
•   We are all equal in our differences

The Equality Act became law in 2010. It covers everyone in Britain and protects people from discrimination, harassment and victimisation. Everyone in Britain is protected. This is because the Equality Act protects people against discrimination because of the protected characteristics that we all have. Under the Equality Act, there are nine Protected Characteristics:

Disability
Gender reassignment
Race
Religion or belief
Marriage or civil partnership
Sex
Sexual orientation
Pregnancy and maternity

At SS John ad Monica Catholic Primary School, we actively promote these in our curriculum and work to embed them into our ethos.
